We’re often asked why we chose to switch to organic production. We can list many “whys” now after being more than 2 years into the process, but our initial decision to change was sparked by a friend’s suggestion. My husband was visiting with a friend/employee of the Iowa State Extension regarding how to make our farm more profitable. He knew a lot of our farming practices were outside of mainstream conventional dairies and more closely aligned with organic production. He advised us to consider organics to capitalize on the efforts we were already making. Shortly thereafter we met with some folks from Organic Valley and the decision was made. We were so unfamiliar with organic dairy farming that we had no idea how closely our operation was already mirroring it. So, I guess our path has been pointing us to organics for quite some time, it just took us a while to find our way.
